The French connection...

Although we picked 4 wines at random to share with you this week, a second look at the list revealed to me a common denominator of all 4 wines. Interestingly enough, they are either owned by French winemakers, and produced in the style of the French winemakers or are made in France.

Bodega Lurton (Argentina) and Hacienda Araucano (Chile) are both owned by Jacque Lurton, who is the son of famous Bordeaux wine personality Andre Lurton, whilst Clos Henri (New Zealand) is the result of Henri Bourgeois' diversification to produce more top quality Sauvignon Blancs and Pinot Noirs outside France. Chateau Guibon is of course a French product!

This great classic has become remarkably well adapted in Argentina. It offers a bright red colour. On the palate it carries all the savours of citrus fruit and extremely fine tannins which serve to ensure the texture of the wine.

Hacienda Araucano Los Arbolitos Cabernet Sauvignon 2005

Deep ruby red colour, on the nose reveals aromas of nicely ripe black fruits with some pleasant notes of liquorice. On the palate is concentrated, an alliance of power density and length. The tannins are silky and the aromatic diversity is impressive.

Intense garnet red colour. Beautiful freshness and complexity. Aromas of nicely ripe small black fruits.

Nice tannins providing a good foundation for the wine as a whole and supporting the great aromatic intensity (small black fruit…) as well as the complexity afforded by the fine notes of spice contributed by the barrel ageing. This superb balance is maintained in the persistent and harmonious finish.

A complex nose dominated by pineapple, guava on one hand and chalk, flint on the other hand which reveals the minerality of this wine with a touch of lemon peel and lime. The taste on the mouth follows the nose with a superb richness. The acidity provides the skeleton and gives the wine focus. The dry finish is long and gives flavours of lime and minerality.

A blend of 50% merlot, 50% Cabernet Sauvignon

Dark purple hues which prepares the drinker for the concentrated, spicy and elegant aromas. On the palate this wine displays balsamic and mint notes. It is harmonious and shows good length.
